Bass Pedal
Any tips for a beginner at using a double bass pedal?

I just got my first double bass pedal. Does anyone have any suggestions for practicing with it? (getting the coordination down, getting faster, etc.)

Playing double bass for me wasn’t so much about the coordination as it was the muscle control. I found it pretty easy to work in syncopated beats and stuff, but what was really hard was getting the evenness from both my feet and getting them in tune with my hands (even now, my feet want to move faster than my hands are playing).

I would suggest you just put on a metronome (VERY IMPORTANT for double bass) and play some alternating patterns of sixteenth notes as well as triplets while playing a simple 2-4 beat with your hands over the top. Practice them at slow speeds and then gradually work your way up. One thing I did that was helpful was to play combinations of straight 16th notes and 16th note triplets.

Another thing that helps a lot is to practice rudiments with your feet–especially paradiddles. It works out your weak foot and helps out later on when you may need to lead a pattern with your weak foot instead of your dominant one. Anything you can play with your hands, you should try playing with your feet too.

Also make sure your pedal is adjusted properly. I find that for fast playing, I need the tension as high as it’ll go. Also, the further down on the pedal you play (and, the further the beater sticks out from the pedal), the faster you can go…sometimes when playing a blast beat my toes will end up right above the hinge on the footplate.

It took me about 6 months to feel good about my double bass playing. It’s been two years since I got my pedal and I still have a lot to learn. But if you do all those things and just practice a lot to work out coordination and muscle control, you should be ok. Good luck!
